THE LIMESTONES VS THE NOISE

In Australia’s Capital Territory, the Reclink Community Cup is represented by two separate yet equally important teams. The Limestones who create and perform the music, and The Noise of the media who talk, write, and post about it. These are their stories.

The Limestones are the muso team in Canberra, and take their name from the main avenue running through the inner-north suburbs where the musicians of Canberra have developed their art in rundown sharehouses since time in memoriam. The Noise are the media team in Canberra, and take their name from their role in amplifying the songs and stories of Canberra – they are in the noise to help lift things out of it. They were brought together to make the VFL-to-AFL-like expansion of the Reclink Community Cup beyond Melbourne truly national, by actually including the nation’s capital (unlike the AFL).

The Canberra Reclink Community Cup has been held five times since 2017 with The Limestones leading the victory tally over The Noise, 4 Cups to 1. Through pre-match events - such as the famous Jersey Presentation Night that always feature an all-star footy-themed band - and the big game itself, as well as the generous support of businesses, organisations and individuals, the Canberra Reclink Community Cup has helped Reclink ACT to facilitate sport and arts programs for some of Canberra’s most vulnerable and isolated.

Over the years, the Canberra Reclink Community Cup is has been supported by the likes local media, venues, businesses, bands, volunteers and many more generous providers.

HISTORY OF THE CUP

The Reclink Community Cup is an incredibly fun day chock-full of family-friendly entertainment, the inimitable football match itself augmented by not just live music but also bars, food trucks and a relaxed atmosphere that firmly emphasises community over football and team spirit over individual skills.

From humble beginnings in 1993, the Melbourne event now attracts more than 12,000 people and raises more than $250,000 for Reclink Australia annually.

Having been played in Canberra since 2017, every dollar raised in the Canberra match and associated events goes directly to Reclink Australia programs within the ACT. Reclink’s structured sport, and recreation programs improve life outcomes for those experiencing mental illness, family violence, homelessness, social isolation, gambling harm, unemployment, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
